Our Documents: 100 Milestone Documents from the National Archives Here is a fascinating collection of 100 documents that have changed American history. From the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, to the original design for the Great Seal of the United States; the parents for the cotton gin and the electric light bulb; a check for the purchase of Alaska; the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments; a notebook from the Manhattan Project; Brown v. Board of Education; and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Our Documents enables readers to hold history in their hands. Comprised of documents judged by the staff of the National Archives to be most essential in the development of the United States from its founding to 1965, Our Documents begins with a foreword by award-winning historian Michael Beschloss, a preface by the Archivist of the United States, and an essay on how the documents were selected. The documents are arranged chronologically with two or more pages devoted to each document. Each entry includes a color facsimile; an introduction to the document that places it in historical context and a transcription of all or part of the document. A selection of photos from the National Archives helps establish the importance of these documents in American social history. The book is part of the much larger Our Documents initiative sponsored by the National Archives and Records Administration, National History Day, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the USA Freedom Corps. Visit www.ourdocuments.gov for more information.
