1920s Movie Star
Picture Personalities: The Emergence of the Star System in America by Richard Decordove, X Moving pictures existed for over a decade before anything resembling a star system appeared. Then, within the space of a very few years, American cinema went from being completely devoid of stars to being completely dependent on them. Picture Personalities is an invaluable account of this crucial development in cinema and modern culture. Conventional wisdom attributes the rise of the star system to the charisma of individual performers or to the public's desire to idolize an appealing star. In Picture Personalities, Richard deCordova argues that the fledgling movie industry and the press conspired to develop the star system, along with a system of discourse to support it. DeCordova shows how the studios worked to fabricate moral images of the stars' marriages and personal lives and how a series of star scandals in the 1920s challenged those images and brought about changes in the conventions of representing stars.
Secret Life of Humphrey Bogart: The Early Years (1899-1931) by Darwin Porter, Until recently, very little was known about the early life of Hollywood's most famous movie star. But this biography, compiled after extensive interviews with eyewitnesses, delves deep into the star's hot, horny, and formative years on Broadway and in early-Talkie Hollywood. Much is revealed about the entertainment industry of the 1920s and 1930s, when publicists from the movie studios deliberately twisted and suppressed inconvenient details about the lives of its emerging stars. One can't read a book like this without a sense of irony at how American myths are created and sustained, and a sense of admiration for the biographers who unlock the doors and windows. Illusions about the chain-smoking anti-hero with the trenchcoat might suffer in the process, but readers emerge with an understanding of who Bogart, the man, really was, the daunting odds, and the exotic temptations he faced during his struggle for survival in early Hollywood. It also examines the back-room tawdriness, blackmail, extortion, larceny, bartered sex, and sheer unadulterated pain inflicted on its players during the 1920s and 30s by America's entertainment industry. Humphrey Bogart was born in 1899 into the prosperous but dysfunctional union of a New York City doctor and a successful commercial artist and Suffragette. Both of his parents scocialized with Theodore Dreiser and a young Franklin D. Roosevelt, and both of them struggled with addictions to morphine and later, shrinking incomes. Never particularly gifted either at sports or at academics, Bogart was eventually expelled from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachussetts. Even before his expulsion from prep school, Bogart became fascinated with Jazz Age Broadway, making friends with entertainment-industry impresarios when he was still a teenager, and developing crushes on well-known older actresses, some of whom reciprocated his attentions.
