Understanding the Great Gatsby: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents by Dalton Gross,
Today, more than 70 years after its publication, The Great Gatsby seems as fresh and pertinent to American life as it did in the 1920s. The social, cultural, and historical milieu of the 1920s reflected in its pages is not so very different from our own. This interdisciplinary collection of commentary and rich collateral materials will enrich the reader's understanding of those times and their influence on Fitzgerald's novel. The authors have included a wide variety of primary documents that capture the flavor of the era and its notorious and flamboyant players. Included are newspaper stories, first person accounts, and congressional testimony from the scandals of the 1920s. These materials bring to life the World Series scandal, the Teapot Dome scandal, gangsters and nightclub personalities like Texas Guinan who defied Prohibition, and the daring young women of the flapper age.

Cross Of Fire / Nitti: The Enforcer
Cross Of Fire / Nitti: The Enforcer
Double Feature includes "Cross Of Fire" and "Nitti: The Enforcer" "Cross Of Fire" - The Emmy Award Winning "Cross Of Fire" is a riveting, explosive historical drama, following the tyrannical rise and shocking fall of D.C. Stephenson (John Heard), the Grand Dragon of the Klu Klux Klan. Successful at feeding on the weaknesses of others, and twisted by his unquenchable thirst for power, Stephenson's arrogance reaches delusional proportions when he kidnaps and forcibly violates a woman (Mel Harris) who has spurned his advances. Brought to stand trial for his vicious and heinous crime, Stephenson has the state's most renowned defense lawyer (Lloyd Bridges) to defend him. Stehenson's arrogance, however, soon turns to desperation. He turns on his fellow Klan members and in doing so reveals the nationwide influence and power of the Klan's bigotry and hypocrisy. An homage to the brave and dedicated people who took on Stephenson against great odds, and an incisive portrait of how power corrupts, "Cross Of Fire" speaks to the past, the present and to the future. "Nitti: The Enforcer" - Here is the true life story of Frank Nitti, world famous gangster and infamous enforcer for mobster boss Al Capone. Set in the 1920s Chicago and featuring a stellar ensemble cast, "Nitti: The Enforcer" is a fantastically vivid and dramatic portrait of prohibition America. Showcasing historical events such as the Valentine's Day massacre and the assassination of Chicago's Mayor Cermak, this film accurately depicts both Nitti's role in American history and the personal triumphs and downfalls of this notorious and complex man. An Italian immigrant who started from nothing, Nitti rises to the top of the underworld through his brains, ambition and fearlessness. Nitti is the man who organizes American crime and makes Al Capone a feared but revered household name.
